Reflection about Big6 and Teaching, Learning and Technology in the 21st Century:
I had never heard of Big6 before doing this project, but as they say in the overview I have been unconsciously using this method without knowing what it is. With 21st Century Learning, learning has shifted tremendously to the student with the teacher being a guide in the learning process. No longer is the teacher the knowledge giver, but instead the responsibility of the learning now lies more with the student. Because of this, students need to be much more active than passive in their learning and cannot simply absorb information given by the teacher. Conversely, the students need to seek out information to not only aid in their own learning but also to be able to use that information to teach others. This can be an extremely overwhelming process, especially now with the abundance of available information on the internet. Students can quickly become to immersed in all the information they find and not know what to do with it or even how to go about accomplishing their learning task. This is where Big6 comes in. Big6 helps students to break the process down into smaller, manageable steps in order to accomplish a previously impossible seeming task. I believe that this process is essential to both students who need guidance on how to accomplish a big, complex task, and to the teachers who wish to teach critical thinking and problem solving skills to their students.
